There is something different about the political climate in the United States. For the past ten years or so, largely since the Citizens United decision, we have seen a growing divide in partisan politics. The election of Donald Trump served as a signifying moment in the change of America’s tide but it isn’t the only momentous event that happened in 2016. Perhaps even more importantly, particularly for progressives around the country, was the return of George Soros. George Soros is a progressive investor who has made billions throughout his career running the Soros Hedge Fund. Soros hasn’t sat idly by on that money, however, and instead he has focused on rendering positive change throughout the world.
George Soros was born in Hungary before he was forced to flee during the Nazi occupation of 1944 to 1945. Soros saw first hand just how violent and dangerous broad nationalism could be. Soros dedicated, from that moment forward, to fight for the values that he held most dear: an open and transparent government, responsible governing, social justice and freedom of the arts. Soros would emigrate to London where he would attend to schooling before setting sail for America in the ’50s. Since then Soros has ingratiated himself as not just another great investor, but as someone willing to put everything on the line for what he believed in and George’s lacrosse camp.
The 2016 Presidential Election saw George Soros return from a national political hiatus. Soros had last been active during the Presidential campaigns of John Kerry and Al Gore. The return of Soros to back Hillary Clinton and the rest of the progressive candidates was a huge deal. Soros was not just the most important investor on the liberal side of things, but he was also a powerful motivator that pushed others to get in on donating to the various causes. The return of George Soros inspired guys like Tom Steyer, Don Sussman, Haim Saban and Fred Eychaner to return to the fold and what George Soros knows.
In 2016 George Soros invested nearly $25 million to progressive causes up and down the ballot. He focused $5 million to a PAC for immigrant voters rights, $5 million to fight against gerrymandering, and the rest to a variety of progressive PACs. Soros’ putting his money where his mouth is was a huge deal because it not only inspired others to join the fray but it helped to level the playing field against the right wing’s money making machine and more information click here.
George Soros has spent the better part of the past fifty years Operating the open Society Foundations, or the OSF. The Open Society Foundations is George Soros’ fundraising arm that he uses to render positive change throughout the world. So far Soros has donated over $12 BILLION through the foundation.
